A Day To Remember: Memorial Concert

13/5/2018

We wanted this to be a really big occasion in honour of our “absent friends” and what an occasion it turned out to be.

First and foremost a time to remember and celebrate members of the band who passed away in recent months but also an opportunity to welcome old friends and new members, including Hilary and David Lomax as joint band presidents.
All the music was in memory of those no longer with us, with some pieces being individually dedicated:
  • British Legion March for Jenny Woodward, our late President, associated with the band for over sixty years and a mainstay of the local British Legion
  • The Irish Blessing dedicated by Lorraine Jenkins to her late husband David, trombone player par excellence as well as “jack of all trades” playing pretty much any instrument the band needed to fill a gap
  • Castel Caerfilli, a traditional contest march for bandsman Jimmy Ruehorn
  • Adagio from Concerto de Aranjuez played most movingly by her grandson Aiden in honour of Anne Oldfield
  • Amazing Grace, a particular favourite of Jean Beard
  • All Things Bright and Beautiful dedicated to Lorraine Coverley

Thanks to everyone for making this day such a huge success -
  • Our MD, Robert Dixon, for his choice of programme, rehearsing it with us and conducting on the day
  • Guest players – Howard and Lou on cornet, John on tenor horn, Sarah and Dave on euphoniums, trombones Andy and Peter, and Graham on bass
  • Our soloists, Aiden with “Orange Juice,” Carolyn Over the Rainbow and Nightingale Javan in a dual role on percussion too
  • The helpers in the kitchen serving teas and clearing up
  • The audience, not only enthusiastic in the appreciation of the music but who generously donated over £470 shared between MS Society, Blythe House and Footsteps.
