As usual, the Band played at the War Memorial in the park for WB Service of Remembrance. A fine, bright, day but on the chilly side so we were glad of our new winter band jackets and matching hats. Not only did we look very smart, but we were toasty warm too. As well as warm, the jackets are waterproof. If the waterproofing is as good as the heat retention, a wet day won't be a problem - but we're in no hurry to put it to the test!

Only three months after celebrating Her Platinum Jubilee, residents of Whaley Bridge gathered again in the Canal Basin for a service of Thanksgiving for our late Queen and her incredible reign. This Service was a slight change to the programme for End of Summer Songs of Praise which Whaley Bridge Churches Together had already organised for this Saturday, and the Band were well prepared to accompany the singing both during the Service and in the shortened "Songs of Praise." which followed. Yet again the sun shone for this special Whaley Bridge community occasion. Many thanks to our guest player Mike on cornet, great to have you playing with WB Band again. One member of the Band was involved in the Service in more ways than one. Karen's talents include more than just playing the euphonium - can you spot her strutting her stuff with the Churches Together Summer Holiday Club Choir? Your secret's out! We've just the job for you when it comes to Christmas - plenty of time to practice the actions for Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer so you'll be ready for the festive season. Back in WB Canal Basin to join in Whaley Wharf Weekend. An informal play out as our contribution to a two day community event of local crafts, produce and arts.
Under the trees behind the building was exactly the right place to be on the last day of the heat wave, in the shade and catching the light breeze. Perfect! An opportunity for us to play some of our old favourites before our summer break. The final stop on the Band's Jubilee Tour - Cromford Court in Whaley Bridge.
The weather was perfect, and the residents plus some extra guests, turned out in force to toast Her Majesty with a glass of Prosecco and join in heartily with the community singing. A fantastic finale to our Jubilee celebrations, a real pleasure to play for such an appreciative audience. A not just a cuppa at the interval - but a full cream tea, totally unexpected but most welcome. Thankyou to Gill, Retirement Living Officer at Cromford Court, for making all the arrangements for our visit and to all the residents, not just for your hospitality, but also for your generous donation to Band funds. You did us proud! BIG THANK YOU to Over The Road Charity Shop in Whaley Bridge for your generous donation to Whaley Bridge Band. We are overwhelmed with your award of £250 and what perfect timing - we were about to start fund raising to buy our own PA system so it couldn't have come a better time. The PA system is an integral part of a Band performance. It enables us to engage with the whole audience - not just those in the those in the front row - with information about the Band and the music. No concert would be complete without the "compere." We've always had to beg and borrow but from now on we'll have out own system - how good's that!!
From everyone in Whaley Bridge Band to Over The Road Shop and your customers THANK YOU Another stop on our Jubilee Tour, The Shady Oak in Fernilee.
And another Perfect Day for weather, narrowly missing the 35 degree temperatures of the previous few days. We were made very welcome by the newly formed Fernilee Community Choir who sang with gusto, and by Leon and his team at the Shady who kept us well fed and watered. Thank you for your hospitality. And our guest players, John and Lis, with their euphoniums (or should that be euphonia?) many thanks for joining us, we really do appreciate your support. Whaley Bridge Band celebrated The Queen's Platinum Jubilee big time. Starting with our very own Jubilee Concert and Community Singing here in Whaley Bridge Canal Basin. The Band were absolutely bowled over not only by the number of people who joined us, but also by the enthusiasm of their singing. Well done Whaley Bridge Community Singers! The programme included music from all four home nations of the UK, as well as some of the Band's favourite pieces, most notably Perfect Day, which indeed it was. No national celebration would be complete without Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem and Rule Britannia. And for this special year, the song the nation voted the one they most wanted to sing for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee - Sweet Caroline. Thank you to everyone contributed to the success of our Jubilee Concert
And still more Jubilee Celebrations to come for the Band On Saturday we were in Kettleshulme for their Big Jubilee Lunch in the park. A short programme as the guests arrived, and after lunch all the patriotic favourites sung at full volume. Kettleshulme certainly know how to sing! Another fine sunny day, but windy. Very windy! Good thing we'd taken the pegs, double strength required today. Thank you, Kettleshulme, for inviting Whaley Bridge Band to share your celebrations Our last event of the Jubilee holiday was at Chinley, who drew the short straw and landed a wet day.
The rain didn't dampen their Jubilee spirit, and they celebrated in fine style starting with a Service of Thanksgiving for the Queen's 70 year reign. The Band stayed dry under canvas - which we relocated after the service to the events arena for the final perfomance of our Jubilee programme. Whaley Bridge is pulling out all the stops to celebrate The Queen's Platinum Jubilee in grand style. First up is your very own Whaley Bridge Band with a Jubilee concert of music and community singing at 3pm in on Thursday 2nd June in Whaley Bridge Canal Basin. Listen to the Band and join in community singing of Land of Hope & Glory, Jerusalem and Rule Britannia to name but a few. Bring a picnic and a glass of your favourite tipple to raise a toast to Her Majesty. Don't forget your deck chair! Whaley's Jubilee Beacon will be lit at 9pm that evening at WB Cricket Club and on Friday 3rd June there is a Jubilee Procession through the town at 12 noon from Canal Street to Horwich End. And the fun continues at the Cricket Club from 1pm, including donkey rides, ferret racing, BBQ, bar, bouncy castle and much more. Get the Jubilee celebrations off to a flying start on Bank Holiday Thursday afternoon in the Canal Basin with Whaley Bridge Band in Concert. Join us there for a right royal celebration! Our grand Christmas finale on home ground in the Transhipment Warehouse in Whaley Bridge. As if the prospect of hearing their own band wasn't enough, the winter sunshine brought the villagers out in droves, a great crowd for the last fixture of the season. The Transhipment Warehouse has become the place to be in Whaley Bridge, where it's all happening.
What a privilege for the Band to be a feature of the the Whaley scene, not just now at Christmas but back in the summer when we first started playing again after the covid lockdown. Thank you to Nev and WB Canal Group for your hospitality, hope you'll have us back next year. More carols at the Old Hall Inn. Although the singing was a little subdued to start with, it got better and better once the gluhwein worked it's magic on the vocal cords.
Thank you all for a great evening. |
